Elena Walch, Trentino - Alto Adige
This rare and exquisite varietal does not, as may be believed by the unititated, derive its name from the light washed-ruby colour of the wines it produces, but from their unmistakable scent of rosewater and rose petals. The fragrance also contains elements of Turkish Delight, cinnamon and cloves and this herbal, almost medicinal character continues through on the palate to balance the wine's syrupy sweetness. Particularly perfect when accompanying light, fruit-based pastries.
The Elena Walch estate
One of the torch-bearing wine producers in Alto-Adige, Elena Walch collected tre bicchieri awards for both red and white wines in 2007, and her Gewurztraminer, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay continue to set high standards for the region. The Estate also has a wonderful restaurant in the heart of its Castel Ringberg vineyard, which is as good a place as any to taste the wines alongside local delicacies.
