Enzo Mecella, Marche
It is not just Enzo's reds which age well - his barriqued Verdicchio has a wonderful honeyed richness and buttery buttiness, which makes for a singular wine experience.
The Enzo Mecella estate
Enzo Mecella sources his grapes from conscientous growers in Matellica, from where the best and most minerally Verdicchio comes, 'perhaps Italy's most characterful white grape', opines Belfrage. The reds come mainly from Monte Conero, a region forming a promontory into the Adriatic producing one the most important (qualitively if not quantitively) Montepulciano-based wines. Gambero Rosso says he offers 'austere wines which age with aplomb' and whilst the fruit can be astringent when young it softens after a few years ageing to offer a spicy complexity that is present on the nose earlier. We are currently offering the extremely good 1998 vintage for your consideration.
