Quite richly-oaked but with attractive almondy, apple-pie fruit boasting a spicy old vine complexity and a salty fennel hint. The quality of the fruit, balanced by good acidity and only middling alcohol (13.5) gives the lie to my preconceptions about oaked Central-Italian Chardonnay.
In the Vaiano Valley, on the borders of Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio, the soils of the Estate have benefited from extensive volcanic activity in the past, gifting to the wines a noticeable mineral drive and complexity. The estate made a name for itself in the 80s as one of Central Italy's best Chardonnay producers but despite its reputation, all the wines remain very reasonably-priced.
