Rocca di Frassinello, Tuscany
The third vintage of this very attractive Merlot/Cabernet dominated blend with a little Sangioveto (15%). Showing more elgance and structure then the previous vintage it remains unoaked, with a ripe, spicy, inky purity to the fruit, and although Massimo, the estate's winemaker, winced at my use of the term, this is a Super-Tuscan at a super price.
The Rocca di Frassinello estate
A recent joint venture in the Maremma between the Castellare Estate (above) and Domaines Barons de Rothschild which is aready bearing fruit. Situated between Bolgheri (the seat of the Super-Tuscan revolution) and Scansano, the region benefits from a similarly warm climate but has soils more akin to Montalcino. The Estate utilises the Rothschild expertise with French varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in particular, and the team at Castellare's knowledge of the region and facility cultivating top quality Sangioveto to create their own Super-Tuscan range. These are early days for this estate but it is already making waves with its first vintages...
