Tenuta San Leonardo, Trentino - Alto Adige
After five years ageing in barrique, the Grappa has a characteristic amber-gold appearance. Full-bodied, aromatic and subtly elegant; a seriously impressive, almost more Brandy-like spirit in its smoothness and unique sensory profile, it is distilled in limited, prestige-enhancing quantities to be savoured in a reflective mood.
The Tenuta San Leonardo estate
Seen as the Sassicaia of the North (and not just because its owner was a consultant oenologist for Marchese Mario Incisa back in the 1960s) this Estate's outstanding Bordeaux blend has received 'Tre Bicchiere' from Gambero Rosso in ten out of of the last twelve vintages and was also numbered among the Guide's 'Fifty Wines which changed Italy'. The wines are more akin to Bordeaux than Bolgheri with their balance and purity and (says Nicclas Belfrage) 'can have an elegance-cum-depth capable of taking on the best clarets of the world'. The Estate is consistently voted the top winery in the region and one of the nine most consistent in the whole of Italy, AND YET its wines remain extremely well-priced by comparison to more widely publicised names.
