Valle, Friuli
An intriguing and exotic red, made with equal parts Refosco, a varietal indigenous to the Friuli region, Merlot and Cabernet. The nose has an intriguing resinous quality with toasted almonds and oak essence, dried plums, quince and wild berries. I also find notes of camphor and juniper on a good sinus day. The fruit is forward on the palate, ripe and spicy. Despite the unusual blend this wine appeals to palates attuned to traditional St Emilions and Pomerols. Well-matched to roasted meats and game.
The Valle estate
One of the region's pioneers of cold fermentation techniques and the use of stainless steel vats to maintain the freshness of delicate white varietals, Gigi Valle is also a stalwart champion of indigenous local grapes like Ribolla Gialla, (Tocai) Friulano and Refosco. The winemaking here, overseen by Paolo, Gigi's son is a great testament to both innovation and tradition - put simply: Valle make old wines better.
